Well, this is one of my biggest hiccups yet! About two months since my last post, 3 major international holidays and my own birthday have come and gone and I’m now riding some coursework deadlines…. Where does that leave this blog?

Well I’ll try is all I can say

Maybe the things I post will become much shorter and constitute primarily a few thoughts or links but I will certainly try to post a little more.

Since my last post I bought Arkham Horror and played a few games and enjoyed them, however it’s brutally heavy duty for the person generally in charge of running it which is inevitably me. I shall coax another few games out of it but will force the materials into the hands of the other(s) willing to pick up some of my slack.

I <3 BSG:BG

We actually picked up Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game to and have played about ten games … While we learned to play we were hammered as the humans but these days we find some careful control and fairly restrained cylons can lead to an easy game. It’s very easy to get crushed or breeze through depending on how bold or outrageous the cylon your opposed to are.

Hmmms. I like this game and will likely keep you informed.

I’ve also hammered Modern Warfare 2 and 100%’d it finishing many of the tougher challenges solo on veteran, I’m enjoying the online and I’ve prestiged once (and will likely continue to do so) but I feel like some of the prestige sacrifices are a bit overly savage. I’d make it so that you unlock more and more challenges, but not that they reset your progress of them but rather just lock off the weapons until the respective levels.

Anyway, that’s enough from me, hopefully you’ll see me soon.

Happy new year.

Regards,

Today is my last Friday working for this company and the work-load has ramped up so I apologize for falling behind yet again, it often feels like you sit down to spend five minutes of your day (on break I suppose) to write some notes about what you did recently, only to have the IT-equivalent of an Atomic-S**t- explosion take place just ten feet from you and the universe as we know it imploads.

There’s also the fact that I have to pack all my shit up over the next 7 days, 2 of which I’m raiding – 4 of which I’m working and at least one of which I’m hungover. Needless to say, my caffeine intake will spike and for once not because of some Rare-drop I convince myself I must have.

I suppose an Ulduar 25 update is in order, according to some sources (but not Rawr) I got what is thought to be the BiS Helm for a Holy Paladin. Needless to say I’m chuffed but also needless to say I’m very very poor now with only about 250g to my name. The item I got was the Ancient Iron Heume (What kind of a word is heume…) with the Intellect+Mana return proc Meta gem and a +16 Intellect yellow gem. It drops from the council, one of the bosses I don’t mind as much but generally causes grief because an interrupter slacks and the raid effectively gets shelled causing trouble for me.

I did see our 45,000+ Hit-point tank take a 58k hit yesterday, needless to say I was not amused and we wiped it up.

Later on I did some number crunching and decided to buy an Emblem of Conquest item and my choices were between the belt (28 Badges) and the neck (18). Both were nice upgrades but I let Rawr make the call for me and I upgraded the neck. I grabbed my Frozen Tear of Elune (omg lorelulz) and logged for the night.

We got both Hodir and Thorim down so Sunday evening is Freya and Mimiron. I think that makes it only 3 bosses before Yogg’saron which I will begrudgingly take part in. In the not to distant future I’m going to start combing my chat logs from WoW for some great anecdotes, so keep tuned in for that but until next time – Die safe.

For although Sacred Shield applying a HOT equal to the healing done by Flash of light is certainly nice it is nothing but a shadowy figment set before my eyes to distract from the banditry at hand!

Endangered Species

So yesterday a friend finally kicked my back-side and convinced me to check up on the 3.2 patch notes, in response to me asking if there were substantial paladin changes he ominously replied “Ohhh yes”.

It has come to Blizzard’s attention that Paladins are over-performing on the mana effeciency front with many high end players completing Ulduar encounters with intact mana supplies. Blizzard has sought to resolve this by reducing our overall mana-pool with 5% off the top of of Divine Intellect and halving the mana return of Illumination (Down to 30% from 60% of Base spell cost).

As hard as two pretty nasty changes are to swallow they do not come without good reason. Paladins have always been the heinously effecient healing class but we paid for that in a relatively poor array of healing tools. We have no castable HOT’s and one insant cast heal which is on a 6 second cooldown. In return for this reduction in effeciency it was off set by providing us with a new take of Sacred Shield and an arguably fixed version of Beacon of Light.

Sacred shield will now apply a HOT for the total amount healed by the flash of light that procs it which means a sizable increase in healing done especially on those bosses where managing to even cast the heal is the hardest part, i’m looking at you Heigan the Unclean! The Beacon of Light buff now means it heals on potential healing done and for up to 60 yards in range, a very nice adjustment to an already powerful spell and arguably further encourages Raid Leaders to utilize us for Raid healing but at the same time further establishes us as the tank-healer of choice.

Whilst nobody likes the nerf-bat it becomes especially hard to swallow when Blizzard clearly does not realise where Paladins are actually underperforming. Any situational fight that contains either elements of movement or cast-time delays hampers us more than any other class. We are left casting 1 instant every 6 seconds, 1 sacred shield and if we are lucky a flash of light. During a Malygos throw the equates to as much as 20k healing split 10k over at most 4 targets but realistically 3 in a scenario where the whole raid takes as much as 20,000 a head.

Druids, Priests and to a much lesser extent Shaman are all better suited for difficult situations and yet Paladins remain as useless in the Malygos fight as ever before. Here’s to hoping that changes in the not to distant future but for now I’ll enjoy healing both tanks in the Razuvious fight and hitting 7.5k Hp/s.

Remember; never drink and heal,

Today I found out that I’m not a complete retard which brought with it a huge sigh of relief. My entry into the final year at University is now clear and I am safe to prepare my project in the knowledge it won’t be a waste of time.

Truth be told, the reason for the lack of posts is two-fold: It’s the summer and I like to relax incessantly and I’ve just plain been stressed out/too busy. Leslie has been staying with me now for about a week and before that I was grafting at the University to prove my worth. Any time in between I spent progressing slowly, but surely, in WoW.

This blog and most of my other outlets have been starved of attention much like most media at this time of year. I recently answered the complaints of my current guild who hated the current Apathy of raiders not taking part.

It’s coming up to my fourth Anniversary in World of Warcraft and there is a regular activity pattern. Guild activity drops sharply during two periods of the year: The Summer and the Winter.

There are two obvious explanations for this, the weather is so damned nice why would you waste your time playing a computer game? The other is that Exams/School Holidays/Work Crunch times are typically around these periods of year adding to the stress, work load and apathy to all grown ups around the world.

This weekend I am down in Gosport again for a old-friend’s 22nd Birthday, I shall meet her new-born daughter for the first time.

Until then my friends, keep gaming and I shall see you for the Fire Festival.

Bring your Repair moneys,

Wow, it’s hard to believe quite so much time has elapsed since I last visited the left a note for the … 8 … people who still look at this on a regular cycle. Sorry about that. Things are a little hectic not least because University stuff literally appeared from nowhere and kicked me in the nuts but also because I made the fatal mistake of getting back into WoW when I’m at my busiest. Yay for that.

Two things today, I wanted to reflect on my recent WoW activity with a brief commentary on what I’ve been doing and how I feel about a few things including the levelling->Raiding transition and the other is a story over on the BBC about a poll they did on Radio 1 to discover the best game. Please do feel free to go read the top 10 so you are suitably horrified for the rest of this blog.

I’m going to assume you’ve read the results of the Radio 1 Games Poll and now know that Call of Duty 4 is the best game ever, a title coveted by many and seemingly reawarded every time a fad comes along. I’m going to pass over the games I’m relatively happy with and just make a few comments regarding the fucked up entries:

Grand Thef Auto IV (10): Are you fucking serious? This game was praised for it’s pretty nice engine but lambasted for it’s terrible gameplay, hateable characters and soul destroyingly dull plot. Are you actually serious? -_-

Football Manager (2): Yes that’s right, FM is SECOND. The bricklayers and builders clearely voted en masse for this one. Sigh. I like sims! And I like football! And even I think FM is a bag of shite.

Fifa 2009 (9): Yep, it’s Fifa. It’s like Fifa 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001 … but with exactly 1 more disappointment.

Halo 3 (8): How did I know the OXM readership would listen to Radio 1?

Out of curiosity here are a few of the good games and where they placed:

World of Warcraft – 4th

Half Life 2 – 12th

Deus Ex – 16th (Noticeably under Fallout 3)

Pokemon Red/Blue – 18th

Half Life 1 – 21st

Command and Conquer

As you can see many of the truly good games ranked, probably appropriately considering that the Radio 1 listenership is quite young but at the same time: Who listens to the radio at the weekend? Predominantly people who are working one might assume. All those white-collar nerds (Like mahself) were probably raiding or trying to alt-boot DOS so they could check out a Microprose classic and did not even find out about the survey until they returned to work on Monday. Quite.

On the topic of raiding (See what I did there) my WoW activity has spiked now that I’ve dinged 80 on my Paladin. Around the 76 Mark I was loaned 500g by Rob to pick up my dual-spec and at the time I was levelling Prot and took off-spec Holy. Tbh, end game protadin is STRESSFUL. Although I generally know all the tacs wherever I’m going I frankly do not have the patience to deal with R-tards. When you’re tanking, it’s all a mile-a-minute and the shit can hit the fan quicker than you can reach for Holy Shield.

Holy is relatively tranquil. Amongst the peaceful sounds of Mik’s Scrolling Combat Text and the soothing glimmer effect that comes with flash of light it’s easy to forget you were fighting a reborn skeletal dragon. Although there is still an element of responsibility – After all I am responsible for whether you live or die – But it’s very much more of a supporting role calling any bonus tacs and pointing out any mistakes for people to improve on.

The Tank is the quarter-back and I’m the half-back. Obscure-American-Football-Reference.

Not long after I dinged 80 I was lucky enough to find myself in a heroic group with an extremely overgeared Prot Pally and a few of his Guild mates. That night we must’ve done 5 or 6 heroics in a row – Enough to come away with a new Epic shield. I accepted their invitation to join their guild and have been running heroics and raids with them ever since.

So far I’ve done OS10, Naxx 10 (All except Kel, they’ve downed him but people are making silly mistakes every time and I don’t join for the rerun) and heroics for most of the other instances. I’ve dinged Exhalted with the Argent Crusade (and got mahself a hat) and now over half my gear is epic 200 Item quality. No set pieces yet though, I passed on my only one since it was a fellow Holy paladin who was running in blues with me in my new Epic Spaulders that only dropped two bosses prior.

Since I dinged 80 and got some of my nice gear we’ve also been running old instances for giggles including Molten Core (2 resets in a row :>) and Onyxia. We also gave BWL a shot but I think some people are too undergeared for it, there were 6 of us which currently makes up: 80 Holy Pally, 80 Enh Shaman, 79 Feral Druid (tank), 72 DK, 72 Shaman, 66~ Mage.

My recommendation: Don’t go until you’ve got at least 3 overgeared top level people. i.e. If the druid could look after himself vs most of the mobs (and cover the Orb Nominee) and one person could be relied on to keep the adds off the boss then I think we’d be ok.

As is, both our attempts have killed the boss before the eggs could go down, and subsequent attempts included botched controls which lead to mass-conflag and a wipe. Going to let the Feral tank ding and get some nice heroic gear – After which I think we’ll be good to give it another shot. The DK is likely to be the next person to ding after which I think Mark will be trying to level his warrior (He’s in outland now, doing fucking well tbh) and Leslie has renewed her levelling effort and only has one or two levels to go until Northrend.

Fun Fun right? Anyway, I look forward to doing some heroics in the not to distant future that are entirely friend driven! We’ve already got 3 80s (assuming Jim dings today :>) which include a Tank and a Healer so we should be ok. Jim may need to invest some cash in premature enchants and gems to get his stats up though but for now we can certainly run some of the easy stuff.

Random tail-end update and gratz for getting this far: I’m coming down to Gosport next week but I will be busy for most of it. I can probably hang out once or twice but I’ve got important University stuff that I need to do. We shall have to meet up and spend hours in Burger King again Also WoW will be on the back burner this week as I prepare all my materials for coming to Gosport.

Enjoy yourself, and GL with levelling Mark.

Spotted an awesome quote in my little header gadget:

Furion: If your eternal vigil has hardened you, my love, it must be part of your goddess’ plan.

It’s not surprise the writing quality that comes out of Blizzard is as high as it is! Today’s update shall be a crazy new pseudo-segment called Premature Observation (Best I could come up with :/) where I talk about games and products that I’ve had not had long enough to fairly review! I have three mini-reviews lined up, so sit tight.

Sennheiser CX 300 In-Ear Headphones (link) 4/5

Moving on from the Skullcandy around-the-ear headphones I had previously I decided I would not make the same mistake twice and realised around the ear headphones are attrocious! These new headphones which I grabbed in the recent (and seemingly neverending …) Play.com sale and they provide a great level of noise cancellation as well as nice performance overall with regards to audio quality and volume.

They’re vastly more comfortable and don’t feel like they’re constantly going to fall out of my ear, I feel that Skullcandy headphones in general seem to be of a poor quality and really very overpriced for the materials used. The cabling felt consistently shabby and the pivot mechanism that makes the whole around-the-ear system work was just poor.

Whether or not the Sennheiser Headphones manage to survive the gym has yet to be seen.

King’s Bounty: The Legend (link) 4/5

I bought this game on PCGamer’s recommendation that I’d get a free-roaming RTS/RPG hybrid that was quirky but fun. That is exactly what I appear to have bought. You pick a hero from 3 classes, then roam a map in “Real-time” (as opposed to turn based) which is very reminiscent of Warcraft 3 with sharper visuals. Whilst on the world map you ride around picking up quests, snatching loot and delving into caves. Then when you come accross a mob it starts an encounter and you fight an opposing army in a Hex battle.

Really this game is closer to a Heroes of Might & Magic clone than anything else but it does it so very well. There are a wealth of baffling quests and ridiculous dialogue: Thus far in my game as a Mage I have already bought a Ship from a Pirate, freed some Ghosts from a Pirate Ship, taken a quest from a talking Rock, Killed the king of the Thornmonsters and … well … the list continues. It’s a massive game that I doubt I’ll ever complete – What with the ragingly unpredictable difficulty curve … But I shall endevour to try.

Fallout 3 (link) 2/5

The third time I started Fallout 3 I decided that trying to build an original or creative character was asking to get your ass handed to you. So this time I took Small Guns, Science and Lockpicking. Wow, exciting right? I get 3 minutes outside of the Vault and BAM attacked by 6 Mercenaries armed with laser rifles … Yeah … Thanks game.

I’ve clocked a few hours now and reached rivet city (arbitrarily meeting some new unexplained creatures along the way) but the whole place is such a clusterfuck of design I have no idea how to finish my quest… I just don’t get how someone can pour so much heart and soul into a game and get some basic level design elements so very wrong. But then … This IS the company who made Oblivion! It shouldn’t surprise me.

Regards,

Anyone who keeps a blog will know this feeling; I do stuff everyday which is probably worthy of a mention, I play games and watch shows which I’d like to share with you … But I just can’t be arsed with articulating it into a post.

I’m lucky in the sense I didn’t make this a formal blog and that RoboticOverlord has yet to grow into fruition so really I can write whatever the hell I like in any format unlike those who write formal reviews for submission and the such like.

For now I will talk about the two things I predominantly did yesterday night (That weren’t coursework) being:

I watched the movie Religulous.

I played some of the new COH Expansion.

Religulous was a delight to watch but hopefully not just as an Atheist. It spent the majority of the movie frankly discussing the God and the convictions of those who believe. The ultimate message throughout claimed to be “Nobody Knows” which is a fairly agnostic comment but his closing epilogue was staunchly anti-religion.

Ignoring that I enjoyed seeing him give Religion the Expelled treatment where you get people to agree to an interview then trick them into answering difficult or obnoxious questions and then editing it to make them look stupid. It was done very well and cut together to be really obvious but still very amusing.

The movie’s strengths came from it’s ability to draw a quote from the subject which wasn’t favourable and then watch them realise what they just said. The US Senator scene was particularly delicious.

Ultimately it’s a blunt commentary on the state of current Religion’s but also a very amusing depiction of the people in charge of them. Sadly if you’re deeply religious you will probably draw no enjoyment from the movie clips used to twist the comments into jokes.

As for the COH Expansion: Tales of Valour I found the new content really very enjoyable. It comes with some new campaigns which are about a specific group of people – In the case of the first mission (and the only one I’ve completed thus far) Tiger 205 which was a fearsome tank and crew who were the bane of the limey existence. You can now control directly where the tank fires which is far better designed than you might think.

The skirmish mode that Rob and I enjoy on a regular basis was not radically different but felt retuned and using some of the “custom” vehicles was definitely a refreshing twist. After all, who else fucking hates the German Motorbike?

We waged a mini-war as the Germans vs a mixed Ally team, we each took a flank of the map with me taking on a forceful British infantry rush on a small bridge on the left flank which was eventually secured by MG bunkers. Rob rebuilt the bridges to the middle and defended against an early onslaught there. (Which intentional or not deflected focus away from me and our home bases)

Eventually I researched up to .88s and Rob pushed them back out of the middle island giving us total control over 2/3 of the map. The fought hard to retake the middle with repeated joint heavy rushes where Rob with my Registered Artillery prevailed (At repeated high costs). Each time we knocked out the bridge and bought ourselves a few minutes.

Now with the upgrades done and resources in hand I established an .88 battery which more or less killed any possibility of further attack on the middle coupled with the Rocket Barrage skill and the Ammo to use it freely.

We built up out Panther/Panzer divisions and took the last island from the Allies.

I fucking love that game, we both saved the reply (I keep losing mine though ;p)

Regards,
James.

Wow! That was quite the impromptu gap in the blogger-sphere! I do apologize for my absence for all the 1 or so people who still check this regularly to get their fix of the glorious self-deprecating and fantastically ironic (all in one sentence I might add) Jaime. Wait … is that a Girls name? (<3 Elle)

Several things are accountable for my recent lapse in activity and in no particular order they’re WoW, Leslie and the Easter Holiday. I’ll run off what I got up to on my holiday for you but only because it includes some movies I wanted to tell you about:

Leslie and I treated ourselves to a visit to HMV which, since the credit crunch began kicking corporate fat cats in the balls constantly, has seen a substantial growth in their discount movie section. I kid you not, I saw a wrapped copy of Scarface for a measly £3 … What would Tony say? However, unlike most trips to HMV which see me leaving with a cheap horror flick and a terrible comedy (I bought Mum & Dad and 40 Year Old Virgin a few weeks back, will talk about them soon) we spent most of our time in the World Cinema section.

Leslie was struggling to decide between two movies, I forget what one was (perhaps when she updates she can tell you ;p) and the other which she eventually left with was Hansel & Gretel. Two things you should know about this movie; It’s a Korean Horror (and therefore instantly awesome) and it’s obviously not what you expect. It’s visceral, horrifying but delectably mellow for the most part. Offsetting the Christmas setting may seem like a cheap trick but every detail of this movie silently screams bloody murders whilst eating sweets for dinner…

Check it out.

Almost as if to prove a point I walked away from HMV with three movies also from World Cinema for the sum total of about £12 and at least one of those you will hopefully know of, they were; Downfall (Germany), Romanzo Criminale (Italian) and Brotherhood (Korea). So far I’ve only had a chance to check out Romanzo Criminale and before I say anything else go out and buy this movie. Buy it if you ever loved Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface or have ever watched anything even remotely gang related and though “Yeah, pretty cool” because trust me Romanzo Criminale will show you the Italians know mobs better than anyone.

It’s somewhat based on the rising to power of an actual gang in Italy who grew to power in the 90s before their ranks eventually thinned and “scores were settled”. This gang was linked to kidnapping, killing reporters, killing judges and perhaps most importantly they were linked to the Bologne Massacre. They also had ties to the Right-wing Government and it’s entirely possible they were all pawns of perhaps the most notorious Mason fraternities to have ever existed (and been known about publically).

The movie depicts the founding members of the gang and tells their story from their first crime (and imprisonment) all the way to the top of the ladder and down again, it truly is a glorious crime novel (see what I did there? What do you mean you don’t speak Italian?) with scenes that could almost have been substituted for those classics I mentioned earlier and you wouldn’t have batted an eye-lid. The most criminal thing you could do is not check this movie out.

I also watched Mum & Dad which I mentioned earlier, I picked it up for £3. The premise is: There’s a (presumably) inbred family living just outside of Heathrow Airport who live entirely off of whatever they can scavange including people. They abuct the lead actress and force her (through very nasty visceral acts) to become part of the family but just as you think the family can’t get worse … Of course they bloody well do. This movie called itself the British Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it’s bloody right to do so. If you can still grab this cheap then do it, you’ll enjoy it more than you enjoyed the last 36 Saw movies.

I think that’s it for the movie summary and now I’ll spend a few minutes talking about WoW before actually getting on with work. I dinged my Paladin level 72 which was a long hard journey of procrastination and I’m sad to have left the Howling Fjord. I’ve moved on to Borean to enjoy some nice easy questing and hopefully pick up some instance runs as main tank, so far I’ve had a generally ok time of it as I’ve done Utgarde Keep a few times. The mobs hit pretty hard and my avoidance really isn’t up to scratch but I have to make the decision of either having stamina gems which contributes something silly like 800 Stamina to my pool (bringing my total up to circa 11k) but also additional damage and ergo threat or going the avoidance route which is obviously better for healers.

So far I’m mostly gemmed for Stamina with a few Defense gems but I’m going to do the research a little later and probably change that up a bit. I did spend pretty much ever last copper piece I had catching my Jewelcrafting up to my level, now I can craft rings and trinkets I can’t wear but at least the gems are great!

Leslie dinged 61 recently and I put some gold towards her epic land mount, she’s doing really well to have gotten this far and now she and I are enjoying brief levelling sessions in Outland with the occasional booster run from me. She desperately needs a good robes if anyone can recommend anything, I think she’s dying to look better

Anyway, I think that’s enough from me, I’ve got no reviews from XE given that they’re now getting the scraps from the XCN. Kind of a shame really that the last couple of reviews that went up were from the weak writers, I’m guessing that probably didn’t help much at all.

If you’ve got anything interesting to talk about then hit me up or @me on Twitter, I’ve been crazy busy so not checking it but now I’m back at the desk I probably will.

Gratz if you actually managed to read all of this!

Peace,
James.

That’s a quote from one of the protesters showing us that he’s only here to destroy our way of life, way to go Free speech. By the way, there is no universal free speech in Sharia law, if you were curious.

Anyway, on to brighter subjects! Yesterday I decided to play Halo 3 of all things, so I popped it in and played a few lone wolves games, it was a bit poor if I’m honest and I didn’t terribly enjoy it. Later on however a few of my friends jumped on and we played Ranked Team Slayer, we aren’t awesome but we did hold our own and I had a lot of fun.

There was one amusing note however, when I exclaimed later on that all I really wanted to do now was go play COD4 everyone agreed and we arranged to meet up next week and give it a few goes. That’s the funny thing really because short of Halo specific cravings (which are rare) I’m probably never going to play it again, COD4 is just a fantastic game though.

Hmm. Anyway, have fun guys,

Greetings and Salutations residents of the internet! Today is the 9th of March and that can only mean one thing, It’s the 9th of March and absolutely nobody cares about today. I’ve got very little to post about, I dinged 70 on my now Protection Paladin to find that nobody wants a Protection Paladin. This annoyed me, a lot.

I have also decided that Empire Total War is unplayable due to the obscene end-of-turn time.

On random news I decided I quite want to learn another language and have decided that that language should be Korean, so far i’ve learned how to write words and tha alphabet, but no actual words and have trouble telling the difference between pronounciations. Half my cue cards have the same sound descriptions on them! So i’ll be checking out some learning resources in my spare time ) I want to go to Korea!

So, without further a due lets wiki what has happened on previous March 9ths!

Jean Callas was exonerated after petitions from my friend Voltaire.

The football team Inter Milan was founded.

The Soviets put down a Georgian demonstration in 1956.

Barbie made her debut.

42 People die in the worst recorded cable car accident.

It’s amazing how little has happened on March 9th! I have a task for everyone who reads this (All Three~ of you), head to the Wikipedia entry for your birthday and post one interesting thing that happened on it, so for example on my birthday is a fairly eventful one so if I had to pick a single incident I’d go with Operation Crossbow which got underway on December 5th 1943, Rob will enjoy reading this I’m sure being the WW2 buff that he is.

Anyway, my only other thing is if you have some time please check out Laputan Machine’s Madmarkus on Twitter, perhaps we can encourage him to post some stuff up. It irritates me how little he does post considering how funny he can be! But also check out Resuri on Twitter, she and I are working on getting a portfolio up at the moment.

Annyong-hi kashipshio! (ok, so I copy pasted that )
