A Random Rant about War Stuff

James Reynolds | September 16, 2008

What a shitty shitty week.

But I don’t particularly want to talk about it right now because – Frankly – It’s depressing and I don’t want to be depressed.

I have been watching Band of Brothers through recently (Heh, depressing show right there) and have to say – I am surprised at how good it actually is. The first episode shocked me with how bad it was… Although i’m Awe struck by some of the stars present it was at the same time very dull.

I think that might be Spielberg at work though. It was about 9 months before I picked it back up … It was the alternative to Jarhead which I put off because I had heard it was dull (and I can believe that). I was immediately rewarded with finding my Orange Box perfectly in tact in the BoB box! Woo!

Anyway, the series definitely picks up with avengeance, the further you get in the more you feel like you have a connection with these characters. The series producers did an excellent job in that respect and when [[AMGS SPOILERS]] Garnier *spelling [[/AMGS SPOILERS]] gets his leg blown off saving a fellow soldier you are left completely aghast. I hated that guy … But I was aghast none the less.

I’ll tell you what, I have a serious craving for some Close Combat now … Some ultra “realistic” fighting stuff.

Personally I find the World War era stuff to be quite tiresome, there is something far more thrilling about Modern Warfare. In todays combat we have mechanized forces with all the best hardware vs. Guerillas. It’s really the worst case scenario in some respects – The Americans to this day are great at training guerillas but terrible at fighting them.

I do love the air bourne though, I recently watched Over There through again and the majority of fights are very typical [Get to Cover]->[Move from cover]->[Provide Covering fire]. That isn’t to say the air bourne in BoB are different … But the “Fire and Move. Fire and Move. Fire and Move” philosophy makes for a scary army to fight.

The only other kind of warfare I love to watch (/play) is classical warfare. Looking at the Roman army, who could operate immensely well as a static line … There is something much more impressive about it to when you compare them to Alexander.

His men would use massive spears to keep the enemy at a distance and whilst the enemy was entangled on these barbs the calvary would smash into them – Hammer and Anvil. Simple.

The Romans were face to face though … Pure discipline and extraordinary base line training meant that every man knew where he had to be and what he had to do. There are great examples in historical documents of these amazing base skills where men shuffled away from the front row periodically (it is argued Spartans kept their front line fresh in a similar way) and by holding the man in front of you to keep the line.

It’s extraordinary to see men operating so in tune to one another … Without the help of guidance systems and radios.

Anyway, this is just a rant and if you’ve actually read this … Congratulations … But you have really wasted your time.

Cheers though.

Regards,
JamesR.

Proper post soon … Probably complaining about something to do with Warhammer or WoW or something.

It’s not like I use my time in any case.
