Chroming at the Mouth

James Reynolds | September 2, 2008

So Google is finally releasing a browser. Good for them. But it would appear to me that they are getting very close to saturation point with regards to public opinion.

The way I see the internet, Google is a shining white knight fighting for all that is good and free protecting travellers as they go about their business but Microsoft is an evil baron who puts toll booths in everywhere and Yahoo is just a guy with an upside down map.

Google has been doing it’s best to get Microsoft out of the web space and rightly so – Their creation of FrontPage was effectively a nuclear bomb from which the internet has never recovered and their browser that works with broken, outdated and unsafe coding standards makes web developers use outdated methods to achieve results with the market holding browser.

Mozilla’s Firefox was a way for Google to use an already existing brand and promote it further – With Firefox now holding 10~% market share I think we can say job done but obviously now Google thinks they can further steal away IE users with their own browser.

I ask not why, but how? Google’s non-invasive methods mean they will have trouble persuading your average internet trog to switch. Does this mean we have a policy change coming?

Will Google start actively recruiting people via their search engine? If not I only think they will steal customers away from Firefox which is effectively taking money out of one of your pockets and putting it in another.

Who knows, I will certainly try it out … I believe Google to be a White Knight even if people can’t see past their fattening wallets.

Regards,
JamesR.

After Google OS … What could possibly be left?

Just want to point out that global market share for Firefox is much closer to 20% than 10% (I believe net applications had it pegged at 19.something % last month).

  • @svenlatham I did pretty much the exact same thing... I'd say so. Unless the lorry plunged off a cliff in the snow it should've arrived 2010/01/14
