Room Revamp
James Reynolds | January 19, 2008As part of living here, apparently it’s my job to clean up the mess my mother makes of my room. She blames me for the state of one of my cupboards … Where she has been hiding storing all my paperwork for the last X-years now. I have in fact emptied it twice, but she always fills it up.
So basically in February i’m going to gut my room and lose basically everything I don’t immediately want. But wait, I could take it one step furter. One of the issues with my current set up is that without replacing my TV with a very swish one that would double as a PC monitor (££££) and then rearranging a few things there is no conceivable way of getting a PC into my room.
Heres a rough floor plan as is:

Just so you know … The wardrobes split into 4, the left is full of crap, the right is full of my mother/brother’s crap and the middle two are full of my clothes of which most of it is crap. Oh and theres a little crap in there to.
The top left block is a mix of a CD rack and a bookshelf (neither of which I need/want).
The thing underneath the TV is my CD player + stand which is full of crap and I don’t even really want/need the CD player.
And theres a bed side table full of crap. Theres also some wall shelves above the bed along the bottom wall, one of which Is my disc-stack of doooooom and the other has random junk on it.
Oh and thats the window on the right, and door at the bottom.
One idea is to ditch the TV and CD player, and get a desk put in … It’d have to be quite narrow and shallow to really fit there … Plus there would barely be enough room to get a TV, PS2, 360, Skybox and a PC there … let alone speakers, mouse & keyboard etc etc etc.
Surely there has to be a better way? … Well how about:
In this version i’ve lost the wardrobe and basically thrown away everything I don’t want. Fuck you childhood memorabilia.
Then i’ve moved my double bed to that wall, and put the desk down against the bottom wall. The TV would have a unit at the foot of the bed and would definately have to hold mah DVDs.
Then a more sensibly sized closet would go in between the unit and the door.
The downsides here include:
-
These are unmeasured estimates: Will everything fit like this?
-
Although there is more open floor space, the door is a bit obstructed.
-
I lose ALOT of storage space (Admittedly I wasn’t using it).
-
I’ll have to convince my mother to take her junk out.
-
I’d need to either replace or tear up the carpet since the built-in wardrobes are straight onto the floorboards.
-
I’d need a new TV Unit, Closet and desk. And bedside table, because mine is shit.
-
I’ll have to dismantle my bed and take my TV and matress out to manage all of this.
Regardless … This is what I want to do. I’m going to get a tape-measure at a more sensible time and see if everything will fit. But otherwise, this seems like a good idea to me. Now I just have to convince my dad to go for it.
Wish me luck?
Anyway, I won’t even be emptying my room of all the rubbish untill at least February, but it’s just something I wanted to get down.
Regards,
James.
