Bantery 23/12/07 – TV Advertising
James Reynolds | December 23, 2007Something that has always bothered me about teleivision these days is advertising – not the adverts themselves mind – but the notion of actually paying for television only to them be blared adverts.
Who in their right mind PAYS to watch Ads?
Well I’ve had this argument with people and it’s pretty pointless because they can hardly disagree with me. Their justifications usually include things like “Its how they make their money” and “Its so people can take breaks”.
You’ll have to forgive me, but I thought I was paying them. It isn’t free, you don’t just get digital television … Even regular old Terrestrial requires you to pay for licencing fees (which go straight to the channels). So the real question ought to be, where is the service offering you television without advertising?
Wouldn’t you pay an extra £10-15/month if they got rid of it? It has gotten so bad recently with 5-10 year old adverts resurfacing that I instinctively and subconciously mute the television.
Even worse than television advertising is when you buy DVDs (often at a premium) and even they have adverts at the beginning and end! The flaming cheek!
Why do we pay for them to make money? WHY?! Why do I pay a Premium £6 (monthly) for a magazine (thats $12+) just for every 5th page to be advertising.
As for breaks in shows, yeah I get that, but does it have to be advertising? It could be public service annoucements … or previews of upcoming shows … You know like the 2 minute bits on Sky One before a show resumes?
God damn it. I love trailers at a movie and I don’t mind news blocks and such … But I am sick of the exploitative methods we are subjected to.
Fuckers.
Regards,
James.
