New Thompson Rubbish
James Reynolds | December 4, 2007One of the annoying things about being banned from ET, but still checking it periodically, is I want to weigh in on a lot of the debates, but thanks to a few (now almost entirely innactive (Who predicted that ey?)) tossers I can’t. This time i’m referring to this particular thread.
It talks about the new movie being backed by the, surely now, infamous Jack Thompson. The lawyer whos batting the worst legal case average in the history of the Miami Bar Association. One has to wonder, what you have to do to get disbarred, because i’m sure JT has done it all.
Anyway, its a movie talking about the affects Violent videos games have and their use as training simulators, all in a move to 1) Blame video games for every violent act ever comitted and 2) Blame Video games for 9/11.
I know what you’re thinking, but he is deadly serious. Now for a second lets pretend we haven’t watched the Loose Change documentary and that it was Islamic Extremists (The Extremists seems redundant considering …) that committed the acts of 9/11. Who Cares if they used a Flight Simulator to practice flying? The idea that these men could learn to fly one of the most sophisticated (not to mention huge) commercial air liners available through Microsoft flight simulator is frankly absurd. I’m sure the video promptly forgets to mention that several of them did in fact attend a flight school where they flew (poorly) single engined sesnas.(?)
Although, I won’t deny that it is potentially plausible, so what does that mean? According to Jack Thompson that is enough to justify that all violent games train people to do stuff.
But you need to remember the key thing here, they were training on a Simulator, not a Game. The difference?
Well you’re sat in front of a £Silly+ simulator set up … It has pseudo-realistic controls and the entire purpose of the game is to give you as close to a real experience as possible.
A game? Lets take a popular one … Counter Strike. All the guns are modelled from real ones, they all seem to behave as such. But you never actually learn how to use one … how to hold one, what half the switches on any given gun do, how to deal with recoil, how to aim using an iron-sight properly, etc etc etc.
About all you will learn is that if you slam a clip into the bottom and pull the chamber (or rifle cock) back it’ll load. In most cases.
One of the things that still irks me, is that people buy into this clearly absurd shit. Think about it rationally … All of the people who commit acts of crime are caused to do so by something specific or by a psychological condition. It is entirely plausible that video games may well be the catalyst in some cases, but they are not to blame.
Would you blame the guy’s girlfriend for the Virginia Tech shooting?
I hope you bloody well wouldn’t …
… for a closing point I’d like to say (presuming you aren’t a Loose Changer) you have to start looking at the real causes of these problems or you’ll never fix anything. All the blatant (evil) fearmongering that you buy into causes more harm than good.
Oh and Religion is to blame you complete pratts. Stop pretending it isn’t.
Oh and Religion and Jack Thompson are hopelessly interweaved, so don’t pretend they aren’t.
Regards,
James.
